2020 demands we re-assess our big picture.
In tarotology, which draws heavily from numerological influences, 2020 is the Year of the Emperor. As I will invariably state many times in the posts, classes and readings to come, there are no “good” or “bad” cards in the tarot. Cards can be in harmony or in disharmony; in equilibrium or out of balance. Carl Jung describes the less desirable qualities of individuals as their “Shadow selves.” The cards, similarly, have both a light and shadow interpretation.
At its core, the Emperor is concerned with the big picture. Foundation, expansion, boundaries - this is His domain figuratively and literally.
If we look at the collective unconscious from a Jungian perspective, we view an Emperor as both a ruler and father figure. He makes the law and sets the tone for how he wants things executed. Essentially, he is the boss, applesauce.
The Emperor sits on his throne, surveying his kingdom.
Now, if we look at the collective unconscious as indicative of the cultural undercurrent or zeitgeist, we can feel the Emperor’s influence throughout this year in politics and the pandemic. We have had boundaries imposed on our freedoms. We have been limited in our mobility. Governments have effectively curtailed who is and is not allowed into or out of their domains. This year feels, in a word, imperial.
So, where do we go from here?
I imagine many of you may be wondering “what’s next” or “what do I do now”? I will have future posts on the retrograde seasons of 2020, the impact on our collective psyche and how the stars also factor into the weird “juju” in the air, but for now I will limit myself to speaking of the tarot and Emperor. I encourage everyone to use the 2020 year to look at your big picture. What is important to you? Where do you want to go and grow from here?
Maybe you will change your career. Several occupations no longer exist or only do so in a modified fashion following the sudden and forced adoption of remote technologies and workspaces earlier in the year. Perhaps this is the year you decide to tackle the book you always wanted to write, or perhaps you will launch an online consulting business.
It is scary, but now is the time to take that step back and re-evaluate whether to continue your chosen path or to veer in a whole new direction. Maybe you’ve already suffered tremendous setbacks and there is a sense of nothing else to lose. Maybe isolation has allowed you to rediscover a missing part of yourself that you have been disconnected with during the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
2020 is scary. But the Emperor also promises growth and expansion, even within the confines of restriction and boundaries.
So, I ask you: What is YOUR vision for 2020 and beyond?
In peace and love,
