How’s your February going so far?
While I am prepping a fun exploration of “love in the tarot” coming up for Valentine’s Day, I thought I would deviate for a moment from my usual topics to spend some time on one of my favorite tarot and astrological dates in history: February 12, 1809.
If you just went ‘huh?’, you are likely not alone.
February 12, 1809 was the birth of two historically significant individuals, one in Shrewsbury, England and the other in Kentucky, USA. That’s right, I’m talking everyone’s famous dynamic duo: Charles Darwin and Abraham Lincoln!
Okay, okay, so the connection may not be obvious at first glance, but trust me on this, it’s pretty nifty.
Here we have two individuals born an ocean apart on the same day who went on to be very progressive and, dare I say, revolutionary in their respective fields of biology and politics.
Being born on the same day, they share the same pattern of destiny. 12 + 2 + 1809 = 1823 = 1 + 8 + 2 + 3 = 14. They are both Temperance Hierophants, belonging to the tarot constellation of “Teaching and Learning.” Hierophants are all about shared values of family and community. They believe in institutions, systems, and law and order. The Temperance life lesson brings in the very Sagittarian philosophical quality that synthesizes information in creative ways, striving to forge a new, middle way.
Sounds a bit like striving for harmony and efforts to bridge together two polar opposite groups of people in the midst of a civil war? Or perhaps like creating a new theory or system of thought regarding nature's first law (survival of the fittest) that goes by the name of “evolution” – maybe you’ve heard of it?
Not only are they both 23 degrees of Aquarius babies, with Darwin’s natal sun is at 23 degrees and 3 minutes and Lincoln’s at 23 degrees and 27 minutes of Aquarius. Being born on the same day, their natal moon placements are also fairly close together in Capricorn. So already they share the same Sun and Moon signs.
Meanwhile, Lincoln’s ascendant is at 23 degrees and 8 minutes of Aquarius, making it conjunct Darwin’s natal sun within only 5 minutes. On top of that, Darwin’s ascendant is at 7 degrees and 18 minutes of Sagittarius which is conjunct Lincoln’s own midheaven at 8 degrees and 9 minutes of Sagittarius.
I could go on and on, for instance about Mars in Libra - fight for equality - or Mercury and Jupiter in Pisces - Mercury being in debilitation and fall in Pisces but co-present with host in its domicile - but I'll spare you the details.
Needless to say, we can already see some of the parallels in their lives and their philosophy. Both were a bit revolutionary for their time. They committed to unique, high ideals that were quite progressive during their time, and the pursuit of enrichment and value placed on the acquisition of knowledge is evident through their chosen personal and professional lives.
This Aquarian energy is what we are in the midst in both this month and over the next 20-year Jupiter-Saturn cycle. What exciting new discoveries or paradigm shifts will occur?
If you are at all interested in learning more about the parallels between these two individuals, I highly recommend Richard Tarnas’s Cosmo and Psyche. It is an amazing tome that stands as a masterpiece in archetypal cosmology for its comparison of historical cycles of synchronicity, but also provides a stunning look at the lives of several prominent historical figures, including Lincoln and Darwin.
In peace & love,
