Pattern of Destiny: The Hermit

Now we explore the last of the personal patterns of destiny personality cards, The Hermit. This is the second of the “mind” cards, representing aspects of our subconscious journey.

Standard disclaimer that if you haven’t yet, I encourage you to read the below linked introductions to this topic prior to reading the explanation of each card. (Bonus: this will also help you figure out which pattern of destiny and life lesson posts are most relevant for you!)

For more context on when or why I like using the Pattern of Destiny personality (aka "birthday") card approach, check out the first Pattern of Destiny: The Magician post.

Let’s meet the Hermit!

The Hermit card is the ninth card in the Fool’s Journey. It is a card of research, study and reflection.

If your Pattern of Destiny number is 9 or 18, then you have the Hermit as your personality (aka soul) card. What does that mean?

Hermits are…

  • Compartmentalizers

  • Authors, professors, researchers, historians and others who like to work independently on projects and share their findings

  • Often confronted by a need to go into “seeking mode” and engage in formal study

  • Acquirers of knowledge and things

The Shadow: When out of balance, Hermits are challenged by…

  • Carving out too much time for themselves

  • Taking on too much of the energy of others or dissociation

Individuals whose pattern of destiny is the number 9 (aka "straight 9s"), as opposed to 18s, have the Hermit as both their personality and life lesson card. That is to say that these individuals may be more challenged by both the strengths and weaknesses of the Hermit personality card than their 18 counterpart. For straight 9s, the Moon (18) is a shadow card that still impacts them subtly but is not their prime challenge or lesson in life.

Nines are also more significant in readings for 9 and 18 Hermits as they share the same base number, 9.

Famous Hermits…

  • Malala Yousafzai – Hermit

  • Greta Thunberg - Hermit

  • Kurt Cobain – Hermit

  • Galileo Galilei – Moon Hermit

  • Nicolaus Copernicus – Moon Hermit

  • Mahatma Gandhi – Moon Hermit

  • Carl Jung – Moon Hermit

  • Whitney Houston – Moon Hermit

  • Elvis Presley – Moon Hermit

  • Joseph Stalin – Moon Hermit

I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about the Hermit and all of the personal pattern of destiny personality cards. If you are interested in learning more about these and all the other cards in the tarot, I hope you will join me for a class. I will be hosting an Introduction to Tarotscopes: Charting Your 2021 & Beyond class on Wednesday, December 16th and the next Foundations of Tarotology course will begin early 2021.
